Want to build a successful relationship with your Gen X or Boomer boss?
One simple tip: listen. It’s really that easy. If you are on the younger end of the workforce, an easy way for you to build stronger connections with your older colleagues is to find someone older than you and ask them questions. Take them to lunch or set up a Zoom call.
Ask them questions about how they got where they are, the sacrifices they made to get there, and how they see the current state of your company. You will not only walk away with nuggets of wisdom, you will have begun to build a bridge that could assist you in getting where you would like to go in the future. If the reason stopping you is that you are not sure if they will say “yes,” rest assured that most people are happy to share what they have learned with someone who is willing to listen. Come prepared to the conversation. Know what you want to ask and what you want to learn. Be sure to thank them for taking the time and if there is a great connection, perhaps you have found a mentor to help you along the way to becoming your best self.
